Studio pottery by the German ceramic artist
Barbara Stehr.
Barbara Stehr studied at the Werkkunstschule in Hanover and later at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg. A decisive influence was her contact with Jan Bontjes van Beek, an important German ceramic artist of the modern period, whose work was closely aligned with the functional and restrained formal language associated with the Bauhaus era. The conscious and differentiated use of glazes became a central aspect of her work.
This vase features a clearly zoned running glaze. The lower section shows a deep olive tone with brown depth, followed by a textured, foam-like transition area leading into a calm cream-coloured neck. The glaze appears deliberately controlled rather than accidental. Broad base, drawn-in neck and slightly flared rim – balanced and harmonious proportions.
Dating: 1970s/80s (stylistic attribution).
Condition: excellent. No chips, cracks or glaze damage.
Original paper label to the base. It has not been checked whether a signature may be hidden underneath.
Appears unused, likely a display piece.
